“Can a woman forget her suckling child, that she should not have compassion on the son of the womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.”

                                                                            Isaiah 49:15-16

Jerusalem was in ruins. The Babylonians had ransacked it. They had wrecked its palaces, desecrated the great alter of God, and dragged down the walls that once encircled the city of God, and those are the walls of which God speaks to Isaiah: “thy walls are continually before me.” What was it that God could see that Isaiah couldn’t?

The walls were either a memory of the past or a dream of the future. They had no being or substance, no foundation in fact. But it was God who was speaking – those walls were not ruined in His vision. We see only the present facts but He sees His eternal plan and purpose. And the most blessed experience, this side of heaven, is to stand with God and have your eyes enlightened to see victory where there seems to be nothing but defeat and ruin.

Gutzon Borglum, the great sculptor, has given us many famous sculptures, but the work for which he is best remembered is the head of Abraham Lincoln which he carved for the Capitol in Washington. He cut it from a block of marble in his studio and the transformation of which filled his maid with superstitious dread. Oblivious to his work on the stone, she went on dusting as usual. But one morning she saw the unmistakable image of the mighty President appearing in the marble. Running over to Borglum, she said in awe, “Is that Abraham Lincoln?” As he nodded, the woman exclaimed, “How in the world did you know Mr. Lincoln was in that block of stone?”

How did God know Peter the rock was in Peter the unstable? Or Paul the apostle in Saul the persecutor? Because God not only sees the outside, but God sees the inwardness and possibility of man. Knowing this, He sent His Son to die for us, that we might become His intention. In Christ, He says, “I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands.” The nail prints say, “I’ll never forget.” The Lord of life watches over us in love!!
